In 1969, the Advanced Research Projects Agency (a part of the Department of Defense) created the ARPAnet, which is the foundation today's "Internet".
ARPAnet's purpose was to ensure that strategic and classified information could be accessed via locations around the country, especially during wartime conditions. ARPAnet pioneered the concept of "internetworking" - connecting smaller networks into a vast "web" of networks - opening the door to the modern-day inter-connectivity's of the Internet and World Wide Web.
Another goal of ARPAnet was to create communication standards, or protocols, that different types of computers could use. The protocol created (and still used today) is called Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (or TCP/IP).
Soon after ARPAnet was created the National Science Foundation built a similar network, called NSFnet, to link academic and research facilities. NSFnet and ARPAnet shared many sites and links, and after the military portion of ARPAnet split off (into a separate network called MILNET), NSFnet incorporated the rest of ARPAnet.
